NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For those longing to escape the daily grind, mend a broken heart, or simply relive the golden era of ‘80s country music, Soul Circus Cowboys have just the ticket. The Southern rock outfit is set to release a reimagined version of the 1984 classic “I Got Mexico” on April 4, 2025. The track, which originally became country music icon Eddy Raven’s first No. 1 hit, gets a modern, island-infused twist featuring a special vocal performance by Raven himself.

Released in May 1984 as the lead single from Raven’s I Could Use Another You album (RCA), “I Got Mexico” became an anthem for dreamers seeking solace in warm sands and salty air. The song, co-written by Raven and Frank Myers, painted a picture of heartache washed away by an ocean breeze—a sentiment that still resonates with country music fans today. Now, over 40 years later, Soul Circus Cowboys are giving the classic a fresh groove, ensuring its place in the hearts of a new generation.

“I loved this song as a kid,” said Billy McKnight, lead singer of Soul Circus Cowboys. “It was truly a thrill and an honor working alongside Eddy to re-record the track as a dance mix. The new rendition has a cool groove, with percussion, horns, and strings. This might very well be one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever performed on.”

The latest rendition of “I Got Mexico” brings a fresh energy to the timeless tune, layering in rhythmic percussion, lively brass elements, and a warm acoustic foundation that captures the essence of an oceanside getaway. A smooth Spanish interlude adds a rich cultural dimension, while McKnight’s relaxed yet compelling vocals bring a new dynamic to the track. With Raven’s signature voice threading through the mix, the song strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary flair.

“The re-recording breathes a new sound that brings new life to the song,” said Raven. “Soul Circus Cowboys’ vocal performance, the harmonies, and the instrumentation give it a contemporary flavor. It sounds like a whole different song that will attract a new and younger audience.”

Produced by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Frank Myers, the release of “I Got Mexico” marks the first in a 2025 waterfall series of Soul Circus Cowboys releases. The band is currently in the studio finishing original material set to roll out through the spring and summer.

Fans will get an extra treat when the corresponding music video for “I Got Mexico” is filmed live at the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Fest in Clearwater Beach, Florida. Raven will join Soul Circus Cowboys on stage for the performance, bringing the song full circle in a setting that perfectly mirrors its escapist spirit.
